Overlooking the River Thames and with views across to the delightful town of Marlow, Bowaters is one of two restaurants at the award- winning Macdonald Compleat Angler.
With two AA Rosettes and a reputation for serving modern British food in a relaxed setting, Bowaters offers flexibility and style for both corporate entertaining and more informal dining.
Lunchtime specials feature a range of classic favourites, including classic Caesar salad and roast rump of Highland lamb, with two courses for £19.95 and three courses at £22.95.
An extensive a la carte menu, produced by head chef David Smith and his team, includes specialities such as gateau of flaked organic Shetland salmon and John Ross Jr smoked salmon to start, followed by pot-roast breast of corn-fed free range chicken, confit potato, spring greens and button onions, tarragon cream sauce, with blueberry and lemon sponge to finish, served with yoghurt sorbet.
The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner and for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea on Sunday. Each Sunday, traditional Sunday lunch is served, priced at £36.50 per person for three courses.
Diners can choose between tables in the conservatory or the weir side of the restaurant and, subject to availability, each separate area can be booked for larger groups, catering for a maximum of 50. Outside dining is also available on the terrace in the summer months.
In 2008, the Compleat Angler received the coveted accolade of the south east’s “Large Hotel of the Year“ at the prestigious Tourism ExSEllence Awards and, as an Inspector’s Choice Hotel, is recognised as one of the top 200 hotels in the UK.

The AA Rosette-awarded Sealevel restaurant and lounge is situated in the hotel lobby, reinvented to meet the changing needs of today’s travellers through the introduction of the ’Greatroom’ concept, a contemporary design which has transformed the public space into comfortable and inviting zones for guests to enjoy, whether residents or local customers.
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, lunchtime specials – with two courses for £12.95 – include Sealevel fish cakes, with the Sealevel fish pie a favourite main course, and desserts such as chocolate fondant or creme brulee.
Dinner choices, created by executive head chef Jaap Schep, feature a fresh and sophisticated menu with a variety of new and classic dishes. The signature dishes, including Sealevel clam chowder at £5.50, the crab cakes, and fish pie at £16.50, are firm favourites, along with steaks from the grill from £21. With carefully selected ingredients fused to create dishes such as the clam chowder with smoked pancetta, the famous fish pie contains smoked haddock and salmon cooked in a cream sauce, topped with mashed potato and cheddar cheese. Desserts to tempt diners include the Sealevel apple crumble with Jersey clotted cream or a British cheese board accompanied by homemade fig bread.
Outside dining is a feature of summer months when the weather is kind, with the terrace an ideal spot to sip an aperitif and appreciate both the hotel’s maritime grandeur and the city’s heritage.
