Small piece of paper Tape Pencil
Magnifying Glass – optional
Procedure: 1. Shade a square (about the size of your fingertip) on a piece of paper. Press hard, and make it dark.
2. Press one fingertip on the shaded square.
3. Place a piece of tape on the shaded fingerprint. You may need to have
someone help you do this!
4. Gently lift the tape off, and stick it on your paper. What do you see?

5. Look closely at your fingerprint (you can use a magnifying glass to do this a little easier). Do you notice any patterns?
6. Compare your fingerprints to the patterns below to see what type of fingerprint you have. You can also repeat this process on other fingers to compare your own fingerprints.
The Science:
The sweat glands in the skin of your fingertips produce a water based oil solution that coats the ridges of your print. These ridges retain a portion of this solution such that when the finger makes contact with a surface, a residue is left behind with is a facsimile of your print. This characteristic gives biometric devices the ability to electronically scan and analyze your print.
Fingerprint patterns are divided into three main groups consisting of: Arches, Loops, and Whorls. Approximately five percent of all fingerprints are Arches, thirty percent are Whorls, and sixty-five percent are Loops.
