In a battle against the weather at the end of May, Martin Burton snatched the J.T Holden Memorial from under the nose of the club’s Junior Captain Aidan Jones. Burton, playing late in the day, signed for an 83-13-70 to win by a single shot after Jones’ 82-11-71 had led for much of the day. Former Captain Ian Syme proved that age is no barrier to success as he strolled to victory in the Arthur Hellicar Scratch Trophy the week after. The eight-handicapper won the club’s premier scratch prize by an impressive four shots with a round of 75. In the club's Open Mixed, the all-Nelson pair of Phil Wright and Frances Sparks took the title with a score of 83/14.2/68.8. The pair won by just less than a shot, with Ian Syme and his wife Margaret their nearest challengers with a nett 69.6. The top three was rounded off by Accrington’s A. Woods and L. Mercer, who signed for a round of 88/18/70. Former captain CJ Walsh and Les George almost cost themselves victory in the club's Senior Open with an error on their scorecard. The Great Harwood pair actually scored 45 points on the day, but incorrectly marked their card as 44. Still that was enough to beat Alan Breckell and Peter Kirtlan (43) and Dave Keeley and Dennis Reedy (42). On the ladies side Marilyn Bernasconi and Gil Halliwell lifted the Ping Fourball competition in Mid-May with a score of 35 points. The following week Kath Lord won the stableford competition, her score of 38 beat Angela Smith by six points. Daphne Dawson won the extra monthly medal at the end of May. The single-figure handicapper fired a 83 gross to end the day three over par and win by a single shot from Sandra Baron.
