Happy New Year! That is ‘Rotary Year’ which runs from 1st

July to 30th June. All

over the Rotary world new Presidents take office on 1st July, including the President of Rotary International, the Governors of all the Districts across the globe and every Club President. (Being good democrats we don’t have to wait 5 years to get rid of our ‘Prime Minister’. We do it every year, and no coalitions!). At an informal dinner with partners and friends last week, outgoing President David Shaw handed over his chain of office to new President Malcolm Ward and retired to the ’back benches’. New President Malcolm (pictured) was born in Haslingden but he and his wife Kath moved to Rishton over 30 years ago and now live in Petre Crescent. A former Signaller in the Territorial Army, he also served as an instructor with the Army Cadet Corps and is well known locally for his community involvement. Since retiring from the brewing industry in 2006, he has been able to spend more time on his voluntary work and is currently Chairman of the Rishton Festival Committee, a committee member at the Rishton People Centre and an active parishioner at St. Charles’ Church. We are looking forward to an exciting year under his leadership. The end of an old year always gives pause to think of the highs and lows of the preceding 12 months. Our lows have been few: we miss some of our long serving members who have passed on, and, for various reasons, we haven’t achieved every goal we set ourselves. The highs are many: fun, laughter and serious moments with our speakers and activities at our meetings, planting the crocuses, being mesmerised by the magicians at the Hocus Pocus Night, the Band Concert, Young Chef, Young Writer, Technology Tournament and the live ‘Lifestraw’ broadcast from Great Harwood Show on Radio Lancashire are just some of them.

Along the way, with your

help, we have raised, and disbursed, some £7,500 for charities and projects ranging from Aquaboxes, Shelterboxes, Lifestraws, the End Polio campaign, McMillan Nurses, dictionaries for our Literacy Project, youth activities and the annual caravan holiday for a local under-privileged family. Our activities have also attracted four new members during the year so now we go into our ‘New Year’ with renewed vigour and high hopes of building on our success. The Rotary Club meets each Tuesday evening at House Hotel, Whalley Road,

the Sparth Clayton-le-Moors. For more
