Would Have, Could Have, Should Have. Will You Dance With Me? Too many people put off something that brings them joy just because they haven't thought about it, don't have it on their schedule, didn't know it was coming or are too rigid to depart from their routine. I got to thinking one day about all those women on the Titanic who passed up dessert at dinner that fateful night in an effort to cut back. From then on, I've tried to be a little more flexible. How many women out there will eat at home because their husband didn't suggest going out to dinner until after something had been thawed? Does the word 'refrigeration' mean nothing to you? How often have your kids dropped in to talk and sat in silence while you watched ' Deal or No Deal ' on the Telly’.? I cannot count the times I called my sister and said, 'How about going to lunch in a half hour?' She would start stammering, 'I can't. I have clothes on the line. My hair is dirty. I wish I had known yesterday, I had a late breakfast, It looks like rain.' And my personal favourite: 'It's Monday.' She died a few years ago. We never did have lunch together. Because we cram so much into our lives, we tend to schedule our headaches. We live on a sparse diet of promises we make to ourselves when all the conditions are perfect! We'll go back and visit the grandparents when we get Steve toilet-trained. We'll entertain when we replace the living-room carpet... We'll go on a second honeymoon when we get two more kids out of college. Life has a way of accelerating as we get older. The days get shorter, and the list of promises to ourselves gets longer. One morning, we wake up, and all we have to show for our lives is a list of 'I'm going to,' 'I plan on,' and 'Someday, when things are settled down a bit.' When anyone calls my 'seize the moment' friend, she is open to adventure and available for trips. She keeps an open mind on new ideas. Her enthusiasm for life is contagious. You talk with her for five minutes, and you're ready to trade your bad feet for a pair of Roller blades and skip an elevator for a bungee cord.. My lips have not touched ice cream in 10 years. I love ice cream. It's just that I might as well apply it directly to my stomach with a spatula and eliminate the digestive process. The other day, I stopped the car and bought a triple-Decker. If my car had hit an iceberg on the way home, I would have died happy. Now...go on and have a nice day. Do something you WANT
to......not something on your SHOULD DO list. If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting? Have you ever watched kids playing on a merry go round or listened to the rain lapping on the ground? Ever followed a butter fly's erratic flight or gazed at the sun into the fading night? Do you run through each day on the fly? When you ask someone, ' How are you?' Do you hear the reply? When the day is done, do you lie in your bed with the next hundred jobs running through your head? Ever told your child, 'We'll do it tomorrow.' And in your haste, not see his sorrow? Ever lost touch? Let a good friendship die? Just call to say 'Hi? When you worry and hurry through your day, it is like an unopened
gift....Thrown away..... Life is not a race. Take it slower. Hear the music before the song is over. 'Life may not be the party we hoped for.. but while we are here we might as well dance!
Councillor Colette McCormack. The New Mayor of Hyndburn. Please let me introduce myself, I am Councillor Colette McCormack, the new Mayor of Hyndburn. I was greatly honoured to be elected to the post of Mayor at the council’s AGM on Tuesday 24th May. I have chosen my husband John as my consort and my good friend Sandra Byrne as my Mayoress for the year. John and I have been married for 35 years and have two grown up sons, Adrian and Christopher and a beautiful grandson, Alfie Jude. We own two businesses in Accrington and are really keen to promote the importance of local trade and local businesses during our Mayoral year. Sandra, the Mayoress works locally for two well known charities, Carer’s Link and Crossroads Care which both provide invaluable support for unpaid carers. As you are probably aware, a big part of the Mayor’s role is to raise money for local charities. This year I have chosen Hyndburn Macmillan Cancer Support, Help for Heroes and Hyndburn Crossroads Care. I feel very lucky to have the support of a great team of people who have volunteered to be on my charity committee this year to organise our events. I’m sure its going to be hard work but lots of fun. Our first charity event is being held at Mitali Restaurant on Warner Street Accrington. The restaurant is hosting an Indian Banquet for the charity. Tickets are £14 per person and include a free entry into the raffle. Tickets can be purchased from the Mayor’s office. Other ideas for events during the year include an Irish Night, musical concerts, Family Fun Day, Christmas Fair, flower arranging demonstrations and much more. Please watch this space for more information. The Civic Celebration Day took place on Saturday 4th June in Accrington Town Centre. Some of you may have seen the impressive Accrington Pipe Band lead a parade of uniformed organisations through the town centre to St James Church where a service was conducted to celebrate my inauguration as Mayor. I was touched by the number of people who participated. I would like to thank particularly the band and marching organisations for taking part, the police for making sure everything went safely and Father Lawrence Carson – Featham for writing and conducting the service. It was a lovely day for all of us involved. I’ve already been lucky enough to be invited to some lovely events in the borough. My first engagement as Mayor was the Great Harwood Show which despite the British weather was a very successful day. It’s incredible to see the amount of work put into events such as this. Another very enjoyable event was a party at the Hollies Nursing Home to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the British Legion. It was lovely to chat to the staff and residents and their families.
I’m very excited about my year as Mayor and looking forward to raising lots of money and meeting as many people as possible. If you are holding an event or work in a community group or voluntary organisation and would like me to visit please contact the Mayor’s Office on 01254 380285 or Email:
themayoraloffice@hyndburnbc.gov.uk Until next month! Colette.

I drink champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company , I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it when I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it, unless I’m thirsty. Lily Bollinger
