Oakwood Park wins Ofsted accolades

WORK in English at Oakwood Park Grammar School has been judged outstanding by Ofsted. A new report says attainment

is high at the end of Key Stage 4 and has been consistently ris- ing. In the past two years, al- most all pupils gained GCSEs in English language and literature at grade C or above, with A or A* grades well above average. Inspector Tony Byrne said his

visit inMarch to look at work in English had provided valuable information which would con- tribute toOfsted’s national eval- uation and reporting. With regard to the subject, he considered that achievement, the quality of teaching, curricu- lum and leadership and man-

both good quality contemporary fiction and a very good range of poetry and pre-1914 literature. Mr Byrne reported on his sur-

Boiler work closes Hazlitt for a month

MAIDSTONE'S Hazlitt Arts Cen- tre will be shut for a month in summer for essential work on the heating and electrical systems. The borough council owners

fear the heating may break down this winter. One of the four boilers has al-

ready failed and the pipework and radiators are more than 30 years old. A report to cabinet said when

the system was flushed out last summerit exposedweaknesses in the pipework, causing leaks in

some areas."It is therefore consid- ered expedient to replace the eld- erly pipework and radiators at the same time as the boiler plant to ensure maximum efficiency of the new system," the report added. The plan is to close the Hazlitt Theatre and Exchange Studio, which contribute over£2ma year to the local economy, from mid- August to mid-September. The project will be funded

from balances as the work was unbudgeted.
