C

lubs across the UK are setting their sights on raising money for charity by taking part in Breast Cancer

Campaign’s £100 Challenge. An incredible £900,000 has been raised by clubs, groups and associations who have taken part in the Challenge over the past six years, and last year alone it raised £200,000 for breast cancer research. We want to continue to boost this total, but can only do so with the help of more groups

‘Clubs can take part in the Challenge at any time of year, raising money any way they choose’

across the UK willing to take on the Challenge. Taking part is simple – just set aside a date in the club calendar, set yourself a fundraising target (Bronze £100, Silver £500, Gold £1,000 or Pink £2,500) and decide on a way to reach it! This year, Weymouth Golf Club will be taking part in the Challenge for the third year running. The club decided to take part and raise money after a much-loved member of the club, Rebecca Mabb, died of breast cancer in 2009. The club raised money by holding a one-day golf tournament in her memory. In the first year of holding the event, they raised over £8,000, far exceeding their target of £1,000. Last year was another great year for fundraising at the club, with over £12,000 being raised in the one day.

Every member of the club helps make the day a success and there are plenty of jobs to do as

well as taking part, such as sponsoring the event, donating raffle prizes, selling tickets and organising teams. Dave Picton, vice-captain of the club, co-ordinates the day with the help of other members and their families. He said: “We first took on the Challenge as a way to raise money for a cause close to our hearts and to bring all the club members together in Rebecca’s memory. “We had no idea that the golf tournament would raise so much money and we underestimated

just how popular it would be. We’re holding another tournament again this year and hope that this one is as successful as the last two!” Clubs can take part in the Challenge at any time of year, raise the money any way they choose, and set their own fundraising target – ensuring that any club of any size can take part.
