or listen to the waves booming in the depths of Merlin’s Cave. Watch fulmars soaring high, or butterflies resting on grassy cliff tops. Cross the common to Bossiney Cove to paddle in the pools or swim alongside Elephant Rock. So much to do that you are spoilt for choice.

Boscastle, with its medieval core and distinctive harbour is one of Cornwall’s most romantic places. It is a village steeped in history, associated with authors and artists who have been inspired by its remoteness and rugged beauty. Abundant in wildlife, dramatic walks and historic features, this village with this many natural attractions are ideal for a guided walk, a fishing trip or a picnic by the Valency. There are tough coastal treks, easy inland rambles, surfing beaches, shady valleys, and high windswept cliffs. Discover the fascinating history, ancient fields, Celtic crosses, Norman churches, a Castle and a medieval quay. A great village ambience awaits you.

Boscastle’s Ghostly Bells, there are no bells in the tower of Forrabury Church, but it is said that they can be heard ringing beneath the waves where they came to rest. Three bells were ordered by William, Lord of Bottreaux Castle, to ward off the plague in the middle Ages. The bells never reached the church, as the ship carrying them sunk in the bay just offshore. Lord William was struck by the plague and died. And the ghostly peal of the bells can still be heard when a storms sweeps across the bay

Crackington Haven is a small unspoiled, almost secret, cove with something for everyone. The beach is pebbly at high tide yet at low water there are sand and interesting

rock pools. The rock formations here are worth a look; observe the famous zigzag folds and faults formed millions of years ago, from black shale, sandstone and quartz veins. From the car park you can follow dramatic coastal walks to the north and south, or take a wooded valley walk inland. A bistro café offers light refreshments or there is a family pub. Toilet facilities are available, and a small outlet for beach items. Beyond the Haven are further treasures and views to discover in the wider peaceful and inspiring parish of St Gennys: Churches, ancient farms, historical sites & buildings and tales of shipwrecks.

Finally to Bude, a fun place for everyone and a dream destination for families with young children, with fantastic attractions designed with younger visitors in mind for truly memorable Days Out. More importantly, it is not necessary to spend a lot of money to enjoy a brilliant family holiday in the area.

In fact, aside from the obvious draw of the

sandy beaches and gorgeous countryside, there is an array of things to do for free in this part of the world. The beaches offer unlimited fun, from swimming and paddling; to crabbing in the rockpools; scrambling over rocks, not forgetting the obligatory sandy picnics and ice-creams. The ‘Pirate Ship’ at Crooklets beach is conveniently situated next to the Crooklets Beach Café allowing parents to enjoy a well-earned cup of coffee while the younger people let off steam. Also at Crooklets children can ‘walk on water’, in giant plastic globes! Don’t despair if the sun doesn’t shine every day on your holiday in Bude as there are plenty of activities to occupy little people and, as every parent knows, if the children are happy everyone is happy!
