On stepping into the warmly lit and tastefully decorated Colosseum in Teignmouth, my partner and I immediately felt at ease. The happy chatter of smiling patrons from all walks of life mingled with live classical guitar – and tantalising smells emanating from the kitchen set our mouths watering in anticipation.
Head waitress and waiter Fleur and Willie made us feel very welcome with their professional yet friendly manner, and we were thoroughly charmed by hostess Lizzie, whose passion for both Italian and locally sourced produce was soon evident. Her recommendations led us on an Italian adventure, of which every course left a lasting impression. With 40 years of experience between them, talented head chef Franco, accompanied by Marco Censi know a thing or two about authentic Italian cuisine, and they use only the finest, freshest ingredients in their elegant, unpretentious dishes.
My starter of specially imported Italian black truffles with tagliatelle wowed me with its earthy, rustic intensity, whilst the saltiness of my partner’s cured beef with Parmesan was inventively balanced by slices of fresh orange. My main was a generous portion of homemade gnocchi wrapped in a velvety gorgonzola sauce, accompanied by a delightful side salad of crunchy fennel, fragrant avocado and the freshest mixed leaves. My partner’s fillet steak with brandy cream sauce was cooked to perfection and served with crisp, al dente vegetables. Finally, the piece de resistance arrived in the form of Colosseum’s signature homemade amoretto and coffee ice cream, a 30-year-old family recipe that my partner described as the best dessert she’s ever had. My crepe with vanilla ice cream and limoncello was equally delicious. To finish we tried another one of their specialities – an intense aromatic bergamot liqueur. We left in cheerful spirits, with the feeling this night would live in the memory for a long time.
Open: Mon-Sat 12.30pm-2.30pm (depending on the season), 6.30pm-9.30pm; Sun open for bookings and special occasions
Colosseum has all the key ingredients that combine to create a truly exquisite Mediterranean dining experience – subtly imaginative, expertly prepared food, served with a big smile in an informal yet effortlessly stylish setting. For me, this isn’t just one of the best Italian restaurants in Devon, but possibly one of the best in the UK.
