more ago, had carved a theatre into the cliff. The Minack however did not exist before 1932, since when it has grown from a gorse filled gully sloping steeply down to the sea, into the magnificently equipped theatre we see today. It is the creation and life’s work of Rowena Cade. Her exhibition centre, opened in Easter 1988, contains exciting displays of archive and interpretive material, photographs and much more. So if you fancy, Shakespeare, Gilbert and Sullivan or Mozart in the open air, the Minack Theatre is an essential stopover, but don’t forget a cushion and your thermal long johns.

Then on to Sennen, one of Cornwall’s smoothest beaches with shining sand. On summer days the Atlantic rollers break and fall as rhythmically as though they were drawn by a ruler. Here there is a wonderful stretch of silver sand and you can walk to the coastguard look-out and visit the Cove Lifeboat Station about a mile and a half from Land’s End. You might call this romantic village America’s neighbour!

Finally, Land’s End. This granite headland has undergone considerable improvements in recent years. It now provides accommodation, good food, and a complete day of fascination for all. Every narrow road that takes you towards Land’s End and the host of small villages is entrancing. Here, standing at Cornwall’s most westerly point where England truly does end, with the dramatic cliff tops and cruel crash of waves pounding below, you will feel as though you are going to fall off the very edge of the British Isles. Here the English Channel, the Atlantic and the Irish Sea all collide, and it is where hundreds of ships have met their end. Some say that commercialisation has ruined this last stop in England.
