Tribute to town’s soldiers
A PLAQUE has been un- veiled to mark a floral makeover of the Rocky Hill war memorial. The revamped garden commemorates links with the Maidstone-based Royal Engineer and Gurkha regiments and re- cent conflicts in which they have fought. A number of plants with symbolic importance and interest have been used in the scheme. They include laurus nobilis (bay laurel) from the Royal Engineers' cap badge; rhododendron ‘Scarlet Wonder’ as red rhododendron is the na-
tional flower of Nepal and celebrates the link with the Gurkha regiments; red roses, symbolic of Eng- land; and tulipa biflora that grows naturally in the wild in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Bridge ward councillor
David Pickett donated money from his devolved budget to pay for the plaque, following a sug- gestion by Lib Dem col- league Fran Smith. The official ceremony
