“Thanks to the Victoria Foundation once again for placing your trust in us,” says Cheryl Reitz of HepCBC. “If we save the life of just one young person, this project will be a great success.”

HEALTH AND RECREATION GRANT HepCBC
Up to 80% of people with hepatitis C have no symptoms. In 2009, 469 new cases of hepatitis C were reported on Vancouver Island. Education is the first step in controlling the virus.
HepCBC Hepatitis C Education & Prevention Society provides education and support to people infected with this virus, their families, and physicians. Their work includes information delivered via their website, newsletters, advertising campaigns, programs, peer support programs and meetings. The organization’s mandate generally helps those who are not specifically members of high-risk communities, and may otherwise fall through the cracks.
HepCBC is the only hepatitis C-specific organization aiming to provide education services about the virus in Victoria area schools. The Victoria Foundation grant will provide high school students with information about the virus through its STOP HepC Youth Project presentations.
These presentations will include a lively 10 minute play, youth-centered pamphlets, and pre- and post-play activities developed to illustrate aspects of hepatitis C prevention and testing. HepCBC hopes that by involving students in these sessions, the level of engagement and the general understanding of the disease will increase dramatically.
By the end of each lesson, students should be able to identify correctly the transmission methods, symptoms, testing, treatment and prevention methods for hepatitis C. This project has the potential to expose the dangers of hepatitis C to the community and reduce infections.
