“At last the five-year-old vision of Captain Burges J. Gadsden…has borne fruit. Victoria Foundation, a community trust to perpetually safeguard and administer gifts and bequests for charitable purposes will soon be filling a long felt want for the city.”

VICTORIA FOUNDATION STEADY GROWTH. STRONG IMPACT.

1 245

In the early years the Foundation grew slowly and quietly, nearly forgotten during and after WWII. By 1957 the endowment was $900 and, as investments were kept safe, it continued to grow. By 1969, assets reached just over $22,000 and the first grants totalling $7,000 were made to the Boys’ Club of Victoria, the Victoria Association of Community Living, and the Maritime Museum of BC.

Over the decades that followed, the Victoria Foundation shaped many aspects of our community. Through its connections with the charitable sector, the Foundation has become the go-to resource centre for philanthropy, allowing it to respond to the needs of our community through stewardship, granting and leadership.

Since our first donor Fannie Gadsden through to the donors of today, we are thankful for the dedication and generous commitment shown to improve the quality of life in Victoria and beyond.
