“Most people say they can count their true friends on one hand – I used to say that too,” says one Artemis student, as she describes what makes this program so special. “Well, when I sit in this room and look at my classmates I would have to use more than two hands. These people are all different and all amazing.”
She quickly adds, “What makes us whole is our school and the staff. But what’s so amazing about Artemis is that we can call the staff our friends as well.”

EDUCATION GRANT ARTEMIS OPTIONS SOCIETY
Mental health challenges impact one in five people and the most common time for problems to emerge is during adolescence. Artemis Place offers a comprehensive and integrated assessment and treatment program for teen girls who are vulnerable to dropping out, addictions, exploitation and suicide.
With over 39 years of experience, Artemis Place provides a holistic, compassionate and nurturing community where girls can enjoy success, develop resiliency, and get the help they need in dealing with social and emotional issues. All of this while being able to continue with their education.
Artemis Place currently offers 24 girls from ages 15 to 19 individual counselling, life skills, issue groups, advocacy and academic support, as well as a comprehensive and integrated assessment and treatment program. It allows them to work within their alternative school with a psychologist, family counselor and community professionals.
As a result of the evaluation and treatment process, qualified assessments may leverage additional provincial supports for the girls. Information will be shared to combat the issue of stigmatization and to increase awareness of best practices in working with these youth.
“Not everyone can be on the front lines doing this important work but we couldn’t do the work without the generous support of the community,” says Lisa Ellis, Artemis Place Executive Director. “Funding from the Victoria Foundation is helping girls to develop into the powerful and wise young women they were meant to become.”
