75 YEARS AND COUNTING HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR 75TH YEAR
OVER $100,000 TO THE CHINESE CANADIAN COMMUNITY
Early in the year, a $75,000 gift was made to the Victoria Chinese community and its rich history. The gift will go towards four different projects, including the David Lam Centre at Simon Fraser University, the Greater Victoria Public Library, the Victoria Chinatown Community Care Foundation and the City of Victoria. An additional $26,000 gift will make it possible to share the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association’s story with the community through the scanning and translation of its significant at-risk historical documents housed in the archives at the UVic Libraries.
VICTORIA FILM FESTIVAL
In February, 10 short films from the Festival archives were presented, each one reflecting on and contemplating life in Victoria – from housing to arts to leadership – a tribute to Victoria’s Vital Signs®
. THE VICTORIA CIRCLE
The Victoria Circle was created to celebrate donors’ passions for the future of our community. As part of the 75th anniversary, the Circle was introduced on April 5th at our Donor Tea held at Government House. It is with the support of our
Victoria Circle members that we are able to turn philanthropic passions into legacy gifts that make meaningful differences. To find out more please contact us at 250.381.5532.
STEPPING UP!
Many habits developed at a young age continue on through to adulthood, and volunteering is no exception. It has been shown that youth who volunteer are less likely to engage in risky behaviour, feel more connected to their communities and tend to do better in school. Funded by the TELUS Victoria Community Board, the Victoria Foundation and Island Savings, Stepping Up is an outstanding new play that teaches elementary school students about the positive aspects of sharing, volunteering and philanthropy.
75 AND COUNTING TEAM - TC 10K
The Victoria Foundation assembled over 130 enthusiastic people to take part in this year’s TC 10K on May 1st. Team members represented the Victoria Foundation, Island Savings and participants of one of our most innovative programs, Every Step Counts (ESC). Many on the team gathered pledges from the community to help support ESC as it enters its third successful year.
75 YEARS AND COUNTING CELEBRATION
Global BC TV News Anchor Chris Gailus emcees our celebration event on June 11th at the Victoria Conference Centre. Guests will enjoy an elegant dinner and insight into philanthropy and the important work of community foundations from keynote speaker Tim Brodhead, CEO of the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation. Canadian comedic icon and political satirist Rick Mercer will provide entertainment courtesy of Island Savings.
VICTORIA SYMPHONY WORLD PREMIERE
The Victoria Symphony will début a generous gift to the community from a former Chatelaine of Government House, Jane Rogers, in memory of her husband, the late Lieutenant Governor Bob Rogers. Composer Anthony Genge explains that the piece is a celebration of the contribution to the community that both Bob and the Victoria Foundation have made.
PACIFIC OPERA VICTORIA WORLD PREMIERE
With a $30,000 gift from generous donors at the Victoria Foundation, Composer Andrew MacDonald and playwright/librettist Stephen Massicotte bring Pacific Opera Victoria its first
new opera commission, Mary’s Wedding in time for Remembrance Day. Set on the prairies and the battlefields of Yprès, Mary’s Wedding is a love letter to the power of memory and innocence, and to a generation of Canadians caught in the crucible of WWI.
VICTORIA COMMUNITY KNOWLEDGE CENTRE
As community foundations move to create new tools of engagement for sharing knowledge about high-impact organizations, the Victoria Foundation is no exception. Following the lead of the Toronto Community Foundation and with the generous support of IBM Canada, the Victoria Foundation is currently developing the Victoria Community Knowledge Centre. This online platform will further position the Victoria Foundation as a knowledge hub, and increase our potential impact by engaging donors and other audiences in a collaborative approach to funding important community initiatives.
