“We don’t have much time,” says First People’s Cultural Foundation’s Board Chair, Pauline Terbasket. “Many languages are endangered through too few speakers.”

She emphasizes the importance of First Language preservation and adds, “Our elders are passing away and we must document First Languages before it’s too late.”

ARTS, CULTURE AND HERITAGE GRANT FIRST PEOPLE’S CULTURAL FOUNDATION

British Columbia is home to 60% of Canada’s Aboriginal languages – and some have already been lost.

As strong culture and language are fundamental to one’s identity, the First People’s Cultural Foundation continues its support of the documentation and revitalization of First Nations languages across the province.

The SEN ´COTEN FirstVoices Language Archive Development program supports the WSÁNEC (Saanich) School Board in the continuing development of the SEN ´COTEN FirstVoices online language archive, and related language teaching applications. Working together, the organization aims to promote and preserve the rich and diverse languages of the First Peoples of British Columbia.

For the First Peoples of British Columbia, language is the foundation for oral stories to relay history and traditional laws and practices. Given the heritage and culture they represent, these languages are important to all Canadians.

The Victoria Foundation’s contribution to this incredible project will enable the creation of content to populate three technology-based language resources, including a FirstVoices Online Language Archive, a FirstVoices Language tutor, and a FirstVoices mobile application for the iPad, iPod and iPhone.
