ABORIGINAL INITIATIVES

WORKING WITH ABORIGINAL PEOPLE IN BC

Over the past decade, the Foundation has supported Aboriginal people through funding programs for individuals and organizations, and as the trustee for First Nations’ settlement funds. We also host endowment funds for Aboriginal- serving organizations such as Surrounded by Cedar here in Victoria.

FUNDING FOR ABORIGINAL PEOPLE AND ORGANIZATIONS

All of the funds awarded through the Scholarship Society’s BC Aboriginal Student Award – over $253,000 in 2010 – go to Aboriginal learners pursuing post-secondary education in BC. In addition, approximately 20% of bursaries from the Youth Education Assistance Fund go to Aboriginal youth formerly in Government care.

For organizations serving Aboriginal people, we provided funding to help children and youth find and maintain lifelong connections through adoption and permanency, and to improve outcomes for people with FASD, many of whom are Aboriginal. In 2010, the Foundation also provided grants for language preservation, a learning program for Métis and First Nations middle school youth, and a pre-school program at the Victoria Native Friendship Centre.

HELPING FIRST NATIONS BUILD CAPACITY

As the trustee for settlements with the Kwadacha and Tsay Keh Dene Nations, the Victoria Foundation provided funding for 43 projects in 2010 that are helping these First Nations improve their social and economic well-being.

Health workers, school upgrades and supplies, a safe house for children, community greenhouses, a society for elders and equipment for managing reservoir lands were some of the projects funded in 2010.

Since 2002, the Foundation has invested $22 million in Aboriginal people and communities in BC. With our track record and experience, we’re helping hundreds of individuals access programs and services, and supporting capacity building within Aboriginal communities and First Nations.
