INTRO DR. DEMO DEMO OF THE MONTH

In Dark Light - CD Demo www.myspace.com/indarklight

A very impressive set from young Hampshire-based quartet In Dark Light who, aside from being annoyingly good looking, are clearly also a very capable melodic rock/pop band. The ambitious production values and imaginative arrangements on this demo also demonstrate an impressive level of maturity for such a young band, fl awless musicianship is backed up by a superb production that buffs their ebullient power pop to a sleek sheen. The only thing that lets them down is a tendency for their ballads to dip into teeth grindingly gauche teenage poetry but

such youthful introspection can be forgiven. In Dark Light are still very young but given time to mature they have the potential to develop their strong commercial slant or else become the next Dream Theatre. Either way, it’ll probably be great!

Matt Bee & The Leverage - CD Demo www.myspace.com/mattbeeandtheleverage

Bristolian indie pop with a sepia tinted folkie edge from singer/song writer Matt Bee. Opening track Come of Age is one of the best tunes from an unsigned artist that we’ve heard in ages. A slow burner that opens with a shimmering haze of jangling guitars and an understated vocal from Matt, the track suddenly explodes in a euphoric two-chord vamp and a piercing guitar line that recalls Coldplay’s Fix You. This well measured blend of rock and more refl ective acoustic elements forms a very solid demo from an artist that, despite not possessing the strongest set of vocal chords, is nevertheless an intelligent writer and arranger backed by with a powerful band. Defi nitely recommended.

The Fire and I - CD Demo www.myspace.com/thefi reandi Minimalist rock from a rhythm section comprising bass guitar and drums who are apparently building up a big following in their native Scotland. The stripped down sound doesn’t sound a million miles away from some early Stranglers tracks that similarly used a distorted bass guitar, mixed way upfront, to beef up their sound with a sonic armor-piercing round. To The Fire and I’s credit they manage to sidestep the apparent limitations of their instrumentation (although it does sound like some tracks also feature some carefully mixed electric guitar to fi ll help out the sound) and their sheer breathtaking energy suggests that as a live band they are a must-see.

Rufus Hok - CD Demo www.myspace.com/jamesfosterlamb

More sounds from North of the border from acoustic singer songwriter working under the curious name of Rufus Hok. This is a strictly DIY effort with a hand drawn CD and some distinctly low key marketing blurb but the homespun vibe nevertheless suits the music’s intimate atmosphere. Split between live and studio recordings, this really does sound like an old school home recorded demo, the sound is bone dry and moving slightly closer to the microphone wouldn’t have done any harm either! Despite the rough edges this is still an engaging set that deserves a bit more due care and attention during the recording stage to truly grace the tunes with the polish that they deserve.

The Doc reviews the best of this month’s unsigned talent…
