y Morning Jacket’s Americana drenched sound, where folk, country and Americana music meet and intertwine, demonstrates the rich musical heritage of their Louisville, Kentucky farmhouse roots. Since 2005 MMJ has delivered a steady trickle of LPs dripping with a myriad of styles,


influences and ideas. Guitarist Carl Broemel was one of the key additions – along with keys player Bo Koster – and the shift from the accomplished country rock of At Dawn (2001) and It Still Moves (2003) is pronounced; the myriad sounds and textures prised from the group on Z (2005) and Evil Urges (2008) show their innate sense of connection with the music of their home country.


“I just love it when a passage speaks to me. There is just some magic within the fingertips of those who really care. You can hear it in their notes even if they aren’t playing any notes at all,” vocalist and guitarist Jim James offers in typically abstract fashion. “There is a very real magic in the way someone who cares just holds the guitar.
