Jet Harris, former bass guitarist with The Shadows, died on March 18 from throat cancer. Harris was most famous for being one of the first high profile bassists to play the electric bass guitar in the UK, taking up the Fender Precision bass in 1959. Harris’ cool matinee idol looks and rebellious nature added some gristle to The Shadows squeaky- clean image but his problems with alcohol eventually led to him being fired from the group in 1962, a situation that came to a head when the bassist discovered that Cliff Richard had been having an affair
with his wife! Despite this, Harris rallied round and actually became a very successful solo artist in his own right during the early 60s, scoring several Top Ten instrumental hits in the UK including the number 1 ‘Diamonds’ that pushed his distinctive powerful bass guitar sound to the fore. By the end of the decade, however, Harris had fallen on hard times, his drinking had taken over and he was virtually a spent force in the music industry, working as a labourer, hospital porter and even a bus conductor! Eventually, Harris did receive some acknowledgement for his significant role as a bassist, Fender honoured him with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998 for his role in helping to establish the Fender bass as a credible musical instrument and he was also awarded an MBE in 2010. However, during Harris’ final years his most satisfying accolades came from fellow musicians; Marty Wilde featured Harris prominently on his 50th Anniversary tour in 2007 and again on his Born to Rock and Roll tour in 2010, which Harris declared to be one of the most enjoyable working experiences in many years.
