The best unsigned bands in the uk, and how to find them!

KÖWA AXIS

KHUDA

A 6-track album of one-take improvisations sounds far too challenging for your average listener, but Köwa Axis’ is a vast improvement on the last album Peripheral Vision. Simply a maelstrom of guitar, stewed in delay, reverb and modulation, the melodies spring from the aural soup strewn across the tracks. Through heavy drones and disrupted guitar figures, the most delightful serene moments arrive. Tellingly, it’s through such methods Johnny Marr came up with his incredibly melodic phrases and patterns. But here Köwa Axis simply leaves you to wade your way through. And what a journey it is, as long as you’re suitably adventurous.

Instrumental heavy rock is pretty common and there are field leaders out there, but it doesn’t stop it from being an instantly engaging format and one that Khuda seem to excel in. Considering the recordings are achieved with the efforts of Leeds-based duo, Tom Brooke and Steve Myles, the results sound staggeringly powerful. Dynamically, the volume and layers of the guitar drive everything, with the drums hooking into its hefty rhythms. It’s comparable to Pelican, Russian Circles and Red Sparowes and these are really good things to be compared to. Go listen to their two albums on Bandcamp. http://khuda.bandcamp.com/

PYONGYANG MAKE BEAUTIFULLY SHATTERED MUSIC… A SCINTILLATING BOMBARDMENT OF THE SENSES!

TOTAL VICTORY

The debut album of Total Victory, entitled The Pyramid of Privilege, is a prism that filters a dense network of familiar and beloved sounds. Hailing from Manchester, this four-piece take up the post-punk mantle of The Fall and sprint flailing towards spacier, elongated songs. More melodic than propulsive, messy as opposed to refined or laser accurate, but everything from the monotone vocals to the incidental sounds is part of the construct. These songs’ driving riffs – whether bass or guitar –don’t make them any less great. http://totalvictory.bandcamp.com/album/the-pyramid-of- privilege
