Besides individual musical instruments, choosing a PA system is probably the biggest investment any gigging band or musician is likely to make. In these days where high quality affordable sound reinforcement equipment (most of which is manufactured in the Far East) is fairly plentiful, these budget-conscious times still dictate that the musician needs to choose carefully so as to extract the maximum bang-for-buck from their rig, budget priced or not.

Wharfedale Pro has come up with


a very tempting way to woo prospective customers looking for a good value PA system. The Wharfedale Pro PMX-700 System is a complete packaged PA that bundles a 300 Wharfedale Pro PMX 700 mixer amplifier (which is also available separately) with a pair of the company’s PTX 12 200w 12-inch speakers; in fact the complete rig even includes a hand held dynamic microphone with a mic cable and a pair of speaker cables. With seven separate inputs, 16 built-in digital effects and dual graphic EQs that can be assigned to individually control front of house and monitors or in stereo mode for the main left and right outputs the PMX-700 System amplifier manages to squeeze what seems like plenty of useful and practical features into a very compact and affordable setup.


Amp & Speakers The PMX-700 mixer amp itself comes built into a tough plastic shell whose integrated carrying handle provides a very welcome aid when lifting or transporting the unit to and from the


stage. Seeing as this mixer amp only weighs 5.45kg (a fraction over 12lbs) there are no issues regarding portability, although when you are more used to heftier equipment the Wharfedale Pro’s featherweight almost caused us to remove the back panel in order to check that there was anything inside the chassis at all! The main control panel presents a


fairly typical mixer amp layout: the six individual mic/instrument channel strips are arranged vertically and include low impedance XLR inputs (with switchable global phantom power) and balanced/unbalanced line level jack inputs. A seventh auxiliary channel features stereo RCA and Line level jack inputs for connecting backing/background music via an MP3 player or CD player or else can be used for connecting a keyboard, sampler, drum machine or similar line level


instrument. The Aux channel also allows some limited degree of adjustment over the EQ via rotary High and Low frequency knobs, plus you also get output level controls for the volume and monitor sends. Meanwhile, the six main input


channels all feature slightly more flexible three-band rotary EQ controls that adjust the High, Midrange and Low frequencies for each individual input together with an output level control; plus you also get a dedicated monitor send on each channel that adjusts the monitor mix via the main monitor bus and an FX Send knob that feeds the signal from each channel directly to the PMX-700’s built-in digital effects processor.


FX Section The effects themselves are accessed via the mixer amp’s Master
