“Maintaining a high quality of life for our residents is a major part of the Buena Vida philosophy and one that every senior should maintain.”

– Donald Spalding, executive director of Buena Vida Estates

“Over 30 years ago, a progressive non-profit organization developed the Elderhostel program for seniors to enjoy the ‘fellowship of learning and the joy of discovery,’” he says. “The program, now called ‘Exploritas,’ is still very active and conducts life-long learning excursions throughout the world.” Following this idea, Buena Vida is offering the Life-long Institute For Education, or L.I.F.E. program, dedicated to the growth and fulfillment of its participants, who include residents of Buena Vida and active seniors from the greater community. This program aims to meet the concerns of staying mentally and physically active, regardless of age. The classes include creative writing, computer basics, bridge, tai chi, dance, aging, spirituality and many others.

MAINTAINING PHYSICAL HEALTH

Physical health is a delicate issue since many problems have surfaced because of poor lifestyle choices early on. “It is never too late to get started,” reminds Spalding, who has been a senior care specialist for over 35 years. “There are noticeable benefits from physical and mental exercise, social interaction and the cessation of smoking at any stage of life.” To address this concern, Buena Vida Estates has established an innovative health and wellness philosophy for its residents. The first of its kind in Brevard County, a new physician clinic was recently opened. The clinic is overseen by Buena Vida’s medical director, John Potomski, Jr., D.O. and staffed by an in-house physician, Karen Stewart, M.D., who is a geriatrician specializing in senior health care. Other professionals working with Buena Vida’s health services division include a podiatrist, mental health nurse, clinicians (with lab draws), audiologist, massage therapist and, coming in the near future, a full-service dental staff, optometrist, dermatologist and ENT specialist. The charm of this arrangement is that residents do not have to sit in a

waiting room to see their physician. Instead, they are called from their apartment 10 minutes before their assigned appointment. Also available is home health, on-site out-patient rehabilitation, case management and a wellness gym with a certified personal trainer. Health professionals provide bi-monthly education seminars on heart health, diabetes, balance, nutrition, Alzheimer’s, dementia and mental health, just to name a few.
