at Holmes Regional Medical Center is dramatically changing and improving the way surgeons at Holmes perform delicate surgical procedures. Holmes Regional Medical Center was the
first hospital on Florida’s Space Coast to use the revolutionary system. With two main components, the da Vinci®
robot’s multiple
mechanical arms hover above the patient in the operating room while the surgeon sits across the room, moving the robot using a series of hand and foot controls while watching a 3D monitor. “It’s just like using your own hands and eyes,
but the robot allows me to get into areas that would have previously required larger incisions, leading to longer recovery times,” says John Bomalaski, M.D., a gynecologic oncologist with Health First Physicians who’s only one of two physicians currently performing surgeries with the da Vinci®
system at Holmes Regional
Medical Center. The other surgeon is Andrew Zabinsky, M.D., a MIMA urologist who’s also a member of the Holmes medical staff.
