Wuesthoff was on the cutting edge – or,
more appropriately the “non-cutting” edge – for years with its minimally invasive surgery program. That move – from open surgery with long cuts resulting in more pain, scarring and recovery to laprascopic procedures requiring just a few small holes – has improved clinical outcomes and redefined standards of care. “At this point, there are few reasons a patient shouldn’t be offered a minimally invasive hysterectomy,” says Dr. Soto. “If they aren’t being given that option, they should consider a second opinion.” While Dr. Soto was a huge proponent of
laprascopic hysterectomies, now that he’s been trained on the da Vinci®
, it has quickly
become his preferred choice. “It’s really amazing technology,” says Dr Soto. “It makes me feel like my hands are right there and the 3-D vision is phenomenal.”
At a recent community program, one of the audience members asked Dr. Soto how close he needed to be in relation to the patient being operated on. “I could be in the next county,” quipped Dr. Soto
before explaining that he was a few feet away at the da Vinci®
controls. “This technology was
developed for the military to have a surgeon care for wounded soldiers out in the battlefield.” While that application never fully took off
(the research company eventually sold the proprietary rights to Intuitive Surgical Systems, Inc., which then developed the da Vinci®
system)
now that it is being used in health care, the possibilities seem endless. Surgeons at Wuesthoff are using the da Vinci® system for urology and gynecology procedures with additional specialties under consideration. Hysterectomies are the second most common
surgery for women in the U.S., with an estimated one out of every three requiring the procedure by age 60.
