A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
Titusville-resident John Hummerick says the SmartDiabetes system has not only provided him with added convenience and improved self- management, but has made him more aware of his eating habits and lifestyle choices. “My HBA1C was 8.4 percent when I started monitoring my diabetes and I managed to bring it down to 6.2 percent. It was easy to control after looking at the graphs every day,” he says. “By bringing my HBA1C down lower, I have been able to stop the progression of peripheral neuropathy (a condition that is caused by nerve damage and often leads to numbness in hands and feet, according to the Mayo Clinic). “Even though certain issues have not completely improved, they haven’t gotten any worse. I feel like I am on the right track because I am able to monitor it daily through the website,” he adds.
SIMPLIFIED BLOOD GLUCOSE MONITORING While data-sharing capabilities represent the
brains of SmartDiabetes, the backbone of the family of products is the Xpres Blood Glucose Monitor, used to test the blood sugar levels of people with diabetes. “No other meter compares to the Xpres Blood Glucose Monitor,” says Christina Brown, marketing director of Infopia USA. “It’s the fastest monitor available in the world. Specifically, test results are generated in just three seconds using this meter, which is about 40 percent faster than other meters currently in retail.” Additionally, the Xpres monitor also requires the smallest blood sample – 0.3 µL (micro-liters) of blood, about the size of a ball-point pen tip. This is compared to traditional monitors, which typically require .5 µL to 1 µL per test. “Meters requiring a small sample size hold
tremendous benefit. A finger prick can be almost painless with the tiniest lancet. Unfortunately, there is no meter on the market that is non- invasive with FDA approval. However, a meter like the Xpres is as close to bloodless as possible,” explains Wes Morrison, vice president of sales and marketing for VPI Diabetes, a preferred distributor of the Infopia USA product line. The Xpres monitor offers the patient 22 test sites on their body.
THE DIABETES EPIDEMIC
Diabetes is a growing epidemic, currently the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. It also is the primary cause for many other ailments including heart failure, blindness, high blood pressure, stroke, lower limb amputations, erectile dysfunction, etc. According to the American Diabetes Association, in 2007, the total cost of diabetes in the U.S. was $218 billion.
Currently, there is no cure, but with increased knowledge, management and live statistics, the incidence and prevalence of diabetes can be reduced.

The Test n’ Share network works by sending test results from SmartDiabetes monitoring products to a data-sharing transmission device. From there, the test results are organized into easy-to-read reports that can be reviewed and analyzed by all members of a patient’s health care team.
THE LAUNCH Recently, Infopia USA partnered with
Walgreens for a pilot program to promote and sell the SmartDiabetes system. With this program, SmartDiabetes is available for purchase at 284 Walgreens stores in Central Florida, including stores in Brevard, Orange, Seminole and Polk counties. Based on the success of this program, Infopia USA plans to expand SmartDiabetes into other retail outlets.
Building on their partnership with Walgreens,
last month the team at Infopia USA participated in Walk With Walgreens, a state-wide initiative that brought out supporters of the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation (DRIF). The walk, which took place at Lori Wilson Park in Melbourne, helped raise money for a cure for diabetes, something Infopia USA is also working toward with the launch of SmartDiabetes. Says Dr. Manion, “The use of the system, as
well as other home-monitoring technologies, will definitely help improve the treatment of, reduce the burden of, and lower the cost of treating chronic illnesses.”
