Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab employs pain management services including physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and therapeutic massage.

ADDRESSING UNIQUE PATIENT CONDITIONS WITH DIVERSIFED CARE

This diversified care model was crucial to The disability forced the once healthy and

active father of two, who was in the business of helping people cure their pain, to change professions and become a real estate agent. Like many people with debilitating pain, Dr. Mike bounced from physician to physician trying every kind of treatment imaginable without any success while his pain continued to worsen. “My symptoms, which started out

as excruciating back and neck pain, eventually worsened and within months I was having numbness and tingling in my legs and feet and forced to use a cane to walk around,” he explains. “Every physician I saw made me feel like they had the ability to end my pain and get me back to work and life again. Chiropractors were saying all I needed was adjustments, the physical therapist said therapy should do the trick, the neurologist recommended dozens of diagnostic tests, pain management prescribed narcotics, and the surgeon said I needed a spinal fusion that required hardware and nine to 12 months of recovery time.”

ENDING THE PAIN Dr. Mike finally decided to take matters into

his own hands. “I realized that I had to find a group that provided more than just one service or specialty to ensure that I wasted no more time and money on unnecessary visits to multiple doctors who did not work cohesively to build a plan for my road to health.” He learned about a new cutting-edge laser spine surgical technique that was available at the Deuk Spine Institute in Melbourne. The procedure was not only minimally invasive, it was an outpatient procedure that would allow Dr. Mike to begin therapy within a few days as opposed to a few weeks or months. The doctor underwent surgery that same week and only two to three hours after surgery, he was up and walking around with significantly less neck and back pain.

Immediately following surgery he

was introduced to the therapy team at Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab, www. sportsandspinalrehab.com, and within hours started on the road to getting his life back on track. “Unfortunately, Dr. Mike’s story is extremely common,” says Dr. Tanya Schrumpf, director of therapy at Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab.

“Our goal was to create a one-stop shop for patients to eliminate the need to go anywhere else to receive care. By bringing together all the specialties under one roof, patients have access to the care they need, when they need it.”

Dr. Mike’s recovery, because after six months of inactivity, his back and leg were weak and tight and needed physical therapy, chiropractic care and deep tissue massage therapy. Each patient condition is put through an

extensive initial assessment, which helps the team at Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab determine the particular needs and the most appropriate form of care. From there, the patient is directed into a therapy program that may consist of one or all of the services offered. The patient is closely monitored during their therapy program, and depending on their need and progress, the program may be altered. The final goal at Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab is to “graduate” patients out of pain and loss of normal daily activities and into a lifestyle the patient chooses to live. In this sense, the organization prepares the patient for any and all activities they choose to participate in, whether it be playing golf, playing with children or grandchildren, exercise, or simply just being able to walk with no pain. “This experience really gave me perspective on

“While not everyone comes in to see us for the same reason or condition, the problem with fragmented care and doctors being more concerned with control and reimbursement over the patient’s well being is now standard in the health care industry.” With offices in Titusville and Viera, Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab is an organization that uses an integrated services approach to the treatment of spine and orthopedic pain and injuries. It employs every service and specialist available for each patient’s therapeutic needs including pain management, physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture and therapeutic massage. “Our goal was to create a one-stop shop for patients to eliminate the need to go anywhere else to receive care. By bringing together all the specialties under one roof, patients have access to the care they need, when they need it,” says Dr. Schrumpf.

the entire maze of health care options, and more importantly on the power struggle that goes on between specialties,” says Dr. Mike. “I was a bit naive in thinking that every doctor I saw had my best interest and health care needs in mind. It took me six months to realize that doctors were trying to keep me in their care because of the economic benefit to their practice and not working cohesively with other specialists that I needed to be referred on to. My suggestion to any patient looking to get quality care is to find a group that really takes pride in getting patients back to life and works closely with other specialists that might be necessary for your long-term health care needs.” Dr. Mike is just one of the many success stories

at Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab. “Dr. Mike really embraced the multi-disciplinary team approach and understood that this unique group was the only hope for a full recovery from his injuries,” says Dr. Schrumpf. “The best part of Dr. Mike’s care was that he had such an amazing recovery that we were able to offer him a job to share his healing hands and success story with patients for years to come.” Dr. Mike has been an active member of the

Florida Sports & Spinal Rehab team since 2009 and is back to treating patients again; no matter that it happened to be “by accident.”
