CONTAINMENT SPECIAL
the last decade and will continue to improve. As we have seen from the recent National Telford Institute meeting, we should be look- ing at greater involvement of engineers in the business – a factor that becomes all the more relevant as we seek to locate larger farms in more exposed marine sites.
Rationale
Like many businesses we are prone to grum- ble about the sea of bureaucracy that is part and parcel of contemporary food production, but we must remember that the regulations are there for a reason. What’s more, they can be used to our advantage – they help to boost the confidence of consumers and confound our critics. We should all commend the work of the Improved Containment Working Group and its efforts to introduce tighter regulatory standards – it is only by showing commitment to solving the issue in hand that the industry will win sup- port for future expansion.
Putting together this special issue of Fish Farmer has been an interesting and enlighten- ing process. Although we have been concen- trating on a single main issue, closer inspec- tion has revealed many smaller matters that need to be considered. But, perhaps the most encouraging point, is that the main aquacul- ture companies have realised that dialogue, co-operation and sharing of best practice will benefit not just individual businesses, but also the industry as a whole.
