I WOULD LIKE TO SEE INCREASED FOCUS ON FISH FARM COURSES IN COLLEGES

farming and should in future be part of induc- tion training, as they will benefit both the com- panies involved and the environment.

FF: Given these independent initiatives are statutory standards really required and desirable?

When salmon farming began to take off in Scotland about 30 years ago there were no operating standards in place with little or no staff training. These days, however, it’s a very different story, with high levels of training and technical expertise essential. Nevertheless, we cannot afford to be complacent and there is always room for improvement. As a result I would like to see increased focus on fish farming courses at colleges, which will include modules on containment – it’s all about raising the profile of the issue.

FF: Do you think the ICWG could be used as a model to deal with other aquacultural issues?

I think it has been a rewarding and stimulating

experience because of the diversity of the group and the wide areas of expertise brought to the table by those involved. Although it helps that everyone is determined to achieve the same goal, the group provides an excellent opportu- nity for everyone to speak and be heard about the best ways of achieving escape-free farming.

FF: Is there any timescale concerning when UK aquaculture standards might be intro- duced? It’s hard to give a precise timescale as it is likely to be a fairly drawn-out process – it took the Norwegians about 12 years to develop and implement the NYTEK standard and involved direct input from over 90 people. We want to do it a good deal more quickly, but we need to decide on the standards before we can hazard a guess at how long it will take to put them in place. However, a first draft standard is due to be drawn up this August and we should have a clearer picture of timescale after the details are released and discussed. This will of course be subject to full consultation.
