HVALPSUND NET

MOVING OFFSHORE A SOLUTION TO CONTAINMENT AT MORE EXPOSED SITES

n the last couple of years the tendency for sea culture of fish has been to go towards offshore or more exposed sites. Realizing this, the team at Hvalpsund Net set out to crack the offshore code, using traditional thinking combined with new technology. The main task to hand was to find materials that could withstand the extreme exposure of an offshore site but could still be set up in a way which is familiar to the farmers.

Winning combination Hvalpsund sales manager, Ryan Poulsen ex- plains: ‘Many equipment suppliers simply use traditional materials and equipment that was originally developed for fjords and lakes and place it offshore. In most cases this equip- ment will not stand up to the job and will be wrecked – or it will have been so heavily upgraded that it is very expensive and dif- ficult to use. Hvalpsund, however, combined cleverly engineered cages made from all high density polyethylene (HDPE) and nets made from the strongest and lightest fibre avail- able: Dyneema® ‘The HDPE cages (called Hvalpsund EX-

SK-75 fibres are the strongest and safest equipment on the market – designed for any offshore site.’

Ryan continues: ‘By reversing the traditional thinking and developing a product which is first and foremost for offshore sites – and using these in sheltered sites as well as offshore – gives the ultimate safety to farm- ers of any species. We don’t believe in using materials of the past like steel and medium density PE – or just crossing your fingers and hoping that no storms will come by. We like our clients to sleep well at night!’

results in significant lower fouling – which also creates less stress and weight. ‘Undoubtedly the combination of Hvalpsund EXTREME cages and cage nets from DSM Dyneema®
