The California State Univer- sity Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excel- lence helps students de- velop skills they could use as analysts or engineers in such organizations as the CIA, the FBI, or any of the 17 agencies of the intelligence communi- ty. There are six undergradu- ate programs and an M.A. program in national security studies. Top students have the opportunity to earn fund- ing to participate in summer travel-abroad programs.

Carnegie Mellon’s CyLab was founded in 2003 and is one of the largest university- based cyber security research and education centers in the United States. CyLab is also designated by the National Security Agency as a Cen- ter of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education. Through Carnegie Mellon’s College of Engineer- ing’s Information Networking Institute, as well as the Heinz College, a number of gradu- ate degree programs are offered in information net- working, information security and information technology, to create a pool of informa- tion assurance professionals who can address the wide range of technology, policy, and management issues in government, industry, and academia.


The Center for Academic Excellence in National Security (CAENS) promotes intelligence community studies through an innova- tive program of study and research that includes broad exposure to interdisciplin- ary studies with particular emphasis on informational science and technology. The center complements major programs of study at Clark Atlanta University with sessions designed to de- velop and enhance the skills needed for employment in the intelligence community. The CAENS Studies program at Clark Atlanta includes an IC Scholars program for college students and a sum- mer institute for high school students.

Florida International University


FIU was one of four original universities designated as Intelligence Community Centers of Academic Ex- cellence (IC-CAE), which provide students with a variety of opportunities for career preparation. The IC- CAE grant established the Program in National Security Studies, including:


• Undergraduate and graduate certificates in national security studies.


• The Foreign Language and Cultural Studies program.


• The High School Program in National Security Studies.


• The local SOUTHCOM internship program.


FAMU is among the first Historically Black Colleges and Universities to achieve National Security Agency designation as a Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Educa- tion. Since its inception in 2004, nearly 80 students have completed the track and received professional certificates recognized by the Department of Homeland Se- curity and the Committee for National Security Systems. Established in 1990, the Center for Secure Informa- tion Systems (CSIS) has the distinction of being the first academic center in security at a U.S. university. It is one of the National Security Agency’s original Centers of Academic Excellence in Infor- mation Assurance Education, a designation it continues to hold. In 2008, the NSA established a new designa- tion–The National Centers of Academic Excellence in Infor-


mation Assurance Research. CSIS has earned this new designation, and is desig- nated for both Centers of Academic Excellence in Infor- mation Assurance Education and CAE-Research through 2013. CSIS’ emphasis on information security makes it unique among the institu- tions of higher learning. The Center resides within the Vol- genau School of Information Technology and Engineering at George Mason University.


Howard University Department of Systems and Computer Science


The


graduate certificate program in computer security and


information security prepares professionals in computer science and the field of cryptography; it instructs them about security in computer networks and distributed systems, as well as control and prevention of viruses and other rogue programs. A majority of the master’s graduates work in industry, for companies ranging from small start-up operations to government labs and large research and development corporations.


A Ph.D. program (pend- ing approval) will prepare teachers and researchers for positions with universities, government research labora- tories, and industry. Academ- ic employment ranges from four-year colleges, where teaching is the primary focus, to positions at major research universities.
