ago to keep up with the ever growing demands from general aviation traffic, and those changes are bringing in even more flights as a result.
“Our facility is top notch and rated the ‘best in its class’ in Canada,” notes Michael Piasta, a line technician at the Centre. “We handle all the needs of all general aircraft coming in or leaving Kelowna. They just call ahead and we arrange ground transportation, storage and refuelling of their aircraft, hotel accommodations,
catering, almost anything they might need to make their trip enjoyable and comfortable. None of these options were available in Kelowna before we opened.”
“Not all our services are available 24-7,” adds Rob Crawford, the Human Resources Manager at Carson Air, “but there isn’t very much we can’t do for you when our core staff is on duty during the day. We aim to satisfy all the travelling needs of corporate and private aircraft clients, business or pleasure.”

Private charters are on the increase into and out of Kelowna. Dax Air is the only executive charter service operating out of YLW since being established in January of 2009. It features a Pilatus PC12 executive aircraft that can accommodate six corporate clients in a cabin that has plush reclining seats, extra large fold out tables, foot rests, a stereo system, private lavatory and coffee bar.
“What is your time worth?” asked Captain Greg McQuaid of Dax Air, who served 20 years in the Canadian Air Force and the past 18 as a commercial pilot. “For most businesses, time is money, and our service makes sense in many instances because our clients aren’t wasting it waiting in security line-ups or for connecting flights and so on. We provide the flexibility of direct flights to your destination, leaving whenever you want, waiting for you if you happen to be running late and being able to take you to locations not well serviced, if at all, by commercial airlines.”
The cost for a private charter is typically competitive with commercial flights when you travel with a group of 6 passengers. Main advantage however is the flexibility and efficiency that make it so attractive for business clients or even those wanting it for pleasure purposes. A same day return trip from Kelowna to Cranbrook on Dax Air for example is $2400 and $2600 to Vancouver. All fees and taxes are included except for the HST.
“Many of our business clients are engineering firms, construction companies or heli-skiers,” said McQuaid. “But we have also seen an increase in fishing charters or clients wanting to take in special events, conferences, sporting events or concerts in other parts of Canada, the U.S. or Mexico. We can fly non-stop 1500 miles and being able to leave when they want and return the same day or night is a huge advantage over commercial airlines and makes our service very attractive.”
