PILGRIM’S CHOICE O

ver the weekend of the 5th/6th February 2011 over 150 runners and walkers took on

Extreme Energy’s (www.xnrg.co.uk) Pilgrim Challenge. Starting in Farnham, Surrey this

two-day ultra follows the North Downs Way covering 33 miles to Merstham, Surrey and back again. Over two days runners climb Boxhill and Reigate Hill twice, taking them through a height gained of 6,700ft. Over 120 runners completed the

event, including 40 to 50 who were using it as a training run for the Marathon des Sables in April 2011.

Perfect Conditions As with all Extreme Energy events there are three starts: walkers, runners and elite runners. All set off on Saturday morning. The weather was ideal for running, overcast, no rain, and a good wind behind.

The Pilgrim Challenge is a two-day ultra marathon across the North Downs

The fastest male on day one was

Mark Collinson in a time of 4:49:55 and the fastest lady Karin Voller in a time of 5:28:00. Throughout the afternoon runners

streamed into St Nicholas School in Merstham, where the first night’s overnight stay was set up.

Welcome Break In the evening a fantastic meal was laid on by the school chef, and then there was a talk by the inspirational Marvellous Mimi Anderson. Mimi talked through some of her outstanding ultra running achievements, including her John O’Groats to Lands End run.

Day Two Once again the running and competition was top draw. Into the wind on day two Chris Townsin ran a very impressive time of 4:46:10, but Mark Collinson put in another steady performance of 4:59

to win the overall men’s category. Karin Voller put in a very consistent

performance of 5:31 making her the overall winner of the women’s category. At the finish the competitors were

greeted with cheers, medals, T-shirts and hugs on their outstanding achievement. Competitors kept on coming in

throughout the evening. The last competitors finished over 12 hours after starting – remarkable resilience.

What They Said “Big thanks to you and the team for organising another superb event.” “As always the checkpoints are the best I have ever come across.” “Many thanks for a great event and I’ll

definitely be back again next year.” The next Extreme Energy event is the

Pony Express, a two-day ultra around the New Forest over 30th April and 1st May. To find out more visit www.xnrg.co.uk.
