Radio star reveals the day she broadcast from the loo!
The Claire Lawson interview By Diane Nicholls
YOU only live once, so enjoy it while you’re here! That’s the motto of radio
presenter Claire Lawson who is the voice of weekends for Heart’s listeners in Kent. Bubbly Claire certainly appears
to follow her own advice - and with a beautiful little daughter, an exciting career, a lovely new home and planning the finishing touches to her forthcoming wedding, there is plenty to enjoy. Originally from the north east of England, Claire has been with Heart
for just over seven years and currently presents her show from 8am to noon on Saturdays and Sundays. “I started off as the travel presenter at Century FM in Newcastle, then the overnight presenter at TFM in Middlesbrough and then I made my big move to Kent,”she says. Claire had no ambition to be a
broadcaster but says she has always loved listening to the radio for as long as she can remember. “I used to record the chart on Sundays without fail and often had pretend shows with my friends in my bedroom – I think I’ve improved a little since then!” While studying for a media
degree at Nottingham in the late 90s, she did some news reading and other work for the university radio “as a bit of a hobby”. She had put a few tapes together but
planned to go travelling with some friends after her final year, much against the wishes of her parents, Shirley and Bill. “My mum and dad were against
the idea, “ she recalled, “but that was what I really wanted to do.” Then Claire’s mum heard an ad
for a traffic and travel presenter with Century Radio and suggested her daughter apply. “To please her, I sent my tape in, and they invited me for an interview, “said Claire. “Eventually, I went through to a live on-air competition where listeners had to choose their favourite person
