How to grow lilies - both indoors and outdoors
The dramatic lily has become a firm
favourite for gardeners and flower arrangers alike, earning its reputation as one of the most popular flowers for the garden as well as indoors. Fantastic blooms, striking colours and wonderful fragrances, it is no wonder they are the world’s number one cut flower. Lilies grow in all soils as long as they
are well-drained and never waterlogged. They perform well in sun or shade. Indoors, give them plenty of light and warmth to stimulate growth, so a conservatory or kitchen window ledge is their preferred spot. Lilies grow well in
herbaceous borders. Here, young spring growth is protected from cold winds and the ground is kept cool and shaded by surrounding plants. The majority of lilies should be planted approximately 6-9 inches
(15-23cm) apart. Surround the bulb with sand to help drainage and discourage slugs. Lilies are remarkably resilient to drought but should never be allowed to dry out. Remove faded flowers as necessary but don’t cut back the whole stalk until the autumn. Most lilies also grow well in
pots. Make sure the container has drainage to avoid drowning. When planting, allow at least 4inches (10cm) of soil above the bulb and use compost full of humus. Give a liquid feed in summer and top dress with new soil each spring, leaving mulch in place until the danger of hard frost has passed. Re-pot every two years and remember to water containers more often during summer. A superb bonus for lilies
in containers is that they can introduce a splash of
colour anywhere in the garden and, once the flowers go over, can be removed to rest. Whatever type of flower garden you
have, there will be a lily that adds colour and beauty. Popular varieties are oriental, Asiatic and trumpet lilies, all making wonderful border plants. Oriental lilies are particularly fragrant and bloom in late summer. One of the most popular is lilium
stargazer - dark red and pink, while lilium casa blanca is often used at weddings. Supplied by Bob Willard, General Manager of dejager
