Walks Take a scenic stroll through picturesque
Penshurst Place and raise vital funds to help improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
Walk with Macmillan Cancer Support in their centenary year and help raise funds to support local people living with cancer. The fantastic annual sponsored walk takes place on Sunday, June 12, at Penshurst Place in the stunning grounds surrounding the 450-year-old privately owned estate and family home of the Viscount D L'Isle, set in the midst of the beautiful countryside of the Weald of Kent. As Macmillan is currently celebrating 100 years of
care to people affected by cancer, the walk will be an important part of Macmillan’s Centenary celebration, as it aims to push for even better cancer care and make a special difference to people’s lives. The walk is an ideal way for people to get active and enjoy a beautiful day in the fresh air with their families and friends. Walkers can join in either the 2.5 or 8-mile route.
The 8-mile circular route goes along the valleys of the Medway and Eden rivers, which give Penshurst its unique setting, before following through the medieval deer park, which offers stunning views of the house. Those who do not wish to walk a long distance or who are accompanied by young children can choose the equally beautiful 2.5 mile route, which leads you along farmland, riversides and old landscape as well as taking you through Penshurst village. The routes are mainly of a gentle nature but it is
occasionally uneven through parkland, fields and narrow pathways. Walkers should note that there are a few steady hills to climb and a number of stile crossings to navigate. In wet weather, the walk has potential to be very muddy so it is advisable to wear suitable clothing
and footwear in this case, or sun protection in the event of sunny weather. There will be an activity for children during the walk, with prizes to be won. There will also be a prize draw for walkers who have raised £100 or more in sponsorship. Both routes will be signposted and marshalled by volunteers; unfortunately they are not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Dogs are welcome but it is asked that they be kept on a lead at all times during the walk. Supplies of water and
bananas will be available, it is suggested walkers also bring additional drinks and snacks. You are welcome to bring a picnic to enjoy along the route but no barbecues are permitted. There is a refreshment kiosk (opening at 9.30am) or tea rooms (open from 10.30am to 5pm) at Penshurst Place, offering cold and hot home-cooked meals as well a children's menu. Registration is £7 per person and there is no
registration fee for under-16s, who must be accompanied by an adult. Walkers who do not pre-register should bring a donation of £10 per adult (16yrs +). Every walker who joins in will also receive a goody bag with a free entry voucher that can be used on the day or up until Penshurst Place closes for the winter. Register online at:
