The Medway factfile:
It’s almost entirely in Kent and flows for 70 miles from just inside the West Sussex border to the point where it enters the Thames Estuary
It has a catchment area of 930 square miles – the largest in southern England
Improvements made in the 1730s enabled barges in excess of 35 tons to navigate all the way past Yalding and even into Tonbridge.
Its middle section, above Tonbridge, is prone to flooding because of the number of tributaries entering the river
In 1942 the world's first test of a submarine oil pipeline was conducted across the Medway in Operation Pluto.
