Cody Geyer hopes for a strong season for Walters State. Cody Geyer had a record-setting

career for North Buncombe that many thought would make him into a MLB draft pick straight out of high school. It did not work out that way for

the state’s all-time home run leader so he is playing this year at Walters State Community College in Mor- ristown, Tenn. He originally signed with the

University of Memphis, but playing for the Tigers would have required a three-year commitment before he was again eligible for the major league draft. So he de-committed and joined the fourth-ranked team in NJCAA and can re-enter the 2011 draft. Te Senators kicked off their season against Tusculum on Tuesday (Feb. 8). According to a release from

Wright State, Geyer will be playing second base and pitching for the Senators. Geyer batted a state record 45

home runs in his four years with the BlackHawks. As a senior, he posted a gaudy .580 hitting percentage as well as a .709 on-base percentage and a 1.275 slugging percentage. He also struck out 99 batters in 12 pitching performances. As a junior, he had a .488 batting

average, 43 RBI, an 8-1 record, 79 strikeouts and a 2.53 ERA. Geyer is a new face for Walters

State this year, but new players are the norm for the junior college ranks. Pitching was a major need for the

Senators with only Shane Grimm, a Kentucky signee, returning with a wealth of experience as a late sea- son starter last year. Zach Fairchild and Josh Bryant each saw time on the mound last year as well, and Chris Costantino, who won a pair of games last year before taking a medical redshirt, and redshirt freshman Jordan Greenway both return as well. Walters State reloaded its corps of

arms by bringing in Geyer, UNC- Greensboro transfer Cody Poarch, Ole Miss transfer Jordan Cooper, Tennessee transfer Kevin Greene, Clemson transfer and former Enka standout Dale Innes, Murphy prod- uct Josh Coker, Zach Walton from Spring Hill, Tenn., England Smith out of Battle Ground Academy in Nashville, Tenn., Milan Mantle from British Columbia and Robert McKinney from Hickory. Te Senators returned just two

position starters in first baseman Corey Davis and second baseman- turned-center-fielder Shaun Ball, and the rest of the roster is made up of all new talent, including Geyer at second base. “We have built up depth in the infield spots with the kids we were

able to bring in this summer, and we feel good about what they bring to the table,” coach Ken Campbell said. In the outfield, another Western

North Carolina product, Univer- sity of Tennessee transfer Cody Stubbs, a former Tuscola star, will start in left. “You know if somebody asked

me if we’re the fourth-ranked team in the nation right now, I would say no. Is there the potential for this team to be that good? Yes there is, but they have to continue to work hard,” Campbell said. “Tey’ve worked very hard so far, and this ranking is really a reflection on the tradition of what we have built here over the last decade.” With so much potential from the

recruiting class brought in and with the addition of three solid transfers at Christmas from NCAA Division I programs, Campbell sees this team as one that should blossom as the season progresses. “I really believe that this team

will get better and better as the season goes along, and that’s what you want to see as a coach,” Camp- bell said. “You want to build for the postseason and peak at that time, and hopefully this team can achieve that.”
