By Robin Wilson After 15 weeks and 45 hours

of intense training, three women graduated from the female shoot- ers class with the shooting ability and confidence that will prepare them for a worst case scenario. Patti Reidinger, Pat Whitaker and Sherrie Watson all signed up for the class after taking the concealed handgun class offered by Don Guge. “Tere was no point for me to

have a concealed permit unless I had the training and confidence to use my gun,” said Whitaker. Tis was a pilot class, and these

women were handpicked by Guge to be the first to take the class. Guge, who has been in law en- forcement for 21 years and is cur- rently a detective with the Woodfin Police Department, is a police and firearms instructor who has taught 61 police academies and roughly 1,600 people. He has the experience but it was

his wife, Barb, who came up with the idea for the women shooters class. “Tere is a definite need for the

class. Tere are females who feel in- timidated by firearms. Our society

has created the misconception that women can’t protect themselves but with a little guidance they can suc- ceed and it may be something that will save their lives,” said Guge. Te classes took place at Guge’s

underground shooting range that was designed by law enforcement specs. Tey spent three hours of intense

training each Monday. Starting slowly, they learned how to feel comfortable just wearing the emp- ty holster. By the end of 15 weeks, they had the ability to shoot left- handed while hitting their target with tremendous accuracy. Tey started with .22 caliber pis-

tols and worked their way up to .45 caliber Glocks.

“I took the course because I

wanted to be confident and the class definitely gave me confidence. I carry a gun because a cop’s too heavy,” joked Reidinger. At the graduation ceremony they

performed a demonstration of what they had learned for their families. Guge is gearing up for another

class to start some time in March. Tis class size will be limited to six women. Guge’s concealed hand- carry class is a pre-requisite for the female shooters’ class. Te next CCH class will be March 5. For more information about the

classes, call 828-989-1996. Editor’s note: See video clips at
