By Robin Wilson Located on Newfound Moun-
tain at the very end of the Big Sandy Mush valley, Randall Glen Farm is a hidden, 80-acre working farm. Te mountainside and rolling pastures just border Haywood County and adjoin 2,000 acres of conservation land. Much of the Sandy Mush val-
ley is still farmed by original settler families. Less than 15 miles from Asheville, the historic farming com- munity of Big Sandy Mush seems a hundred years away in time. Owners Mary Adore Coloney
and friend Linda Goodin bought the property six years ago with the intention of offering horseback rides and cabin rentals but have received so much more. Tere are over 100 animals not
counting the ducks, chickens and geese. Te farm is home to sheep, goats, dogs, cows, horses, pigs and a llama plus an acre garden with over 60 different varieties of vegetables. Tere is also an orchard on the prop- erty with 25 different types of heir- loom apples and other fruit. Many of the old breeds are disappearing so wherever the owners can, they raise traditional, heirloom animals and
crops. Coloney grew up spending her
summers at Pisgah View Ranch in Candler and knew this farm was her calling. She spent most of her adult life as a professional artist. Goodin has worked with horses
and livestock her whole life so buying the farm was a good fit. “We wanted to have a place that brings families to- gether. Living here at Randall Glen, I feel lucky every day,” said Coloney. Tere are five secluded luxury cab-
ins where people come to vacation and spend time on the farm. Te owners also offer trout fishing, gem mining, horseback riding, wagon rides, hiking or just enjoying a book and overlooking the peaceful moun- tains. Teir guests can take home mountain crafts offered in the gift shop where there is an array of local artisans’ wares such as stained glass, quilts, paintings, jewelry and more. Te cabins house up to 30 or so
guests, and everyone can come to- gether at the end of the day and enjoy a bonfire and marshmallow roast. Randall Glen has two full-time employees in the winter months and about six employees in the summer months. For more information about Ran-
dall Glen Farms, go to randallglen. com.
