Letters to the Editor Winning football games needs to start inside

Dear Editor, I want to make a comment on a quote I read in Matt

Tate’s article about Coach Carey Metts. In the article there is a statement that says, “North Buncombe tends not to have the type of athletes some other areas do.” In my opinion that pretty much sums up the attitude

of North Buncombe football. No, I am not going to crucify Carey Metts. First let me state for the record, Caery Metts and I are brothers in Christ. I love him dearly as a brother. If this statement is meant to reflect our deficiency to

produce good athletes, how do we explain our success in basketball, baseball, track, etc? Is there something in the water out here that makes us slow and content with losing? Our problem is our complacency with losing. You should never take the field expecting to lose. Show me an athlete that doesn’t believe he has a chance to win on any given day, I’ll show you a loser. Tis is the attitude that I have witnessed here, even

before Carey Metts came to Weaverville. We accept that we are slow and not talented. We accept great teams like the return of locust, every 14 years. Where is the heart and determination to win that truly defines a champion? We talk about Randy Pressley a lot, recollecting on

the “good ol’ days,” when we were good. As I remember there were a lot of good players on that team, not just one. I always thought that team’s offense reminded me of a Chinese fire drill. Everything big seemed to come off a busted play. Te defense really made that team. Justin Rice was

the heart and soul of that squad. Remember the big win over Erwin, who “caused” that fumble that Pressley took to the house for the upset last-minute win? Want to remember a great team, think about 1995. Not a weak link on the field. Tey were truly a great team with a great leader, Jeremy Laster. Tey were successful at all levels from pee wee all the way to varsity. Tey expected to win every time they took the field. Tey hit hard and first, something we have not done for a long time. I will agree that we are not blessed with a squad three

deep that runs the 40 in 4.3, but who else is? Madison, Mitchell or Heritage? All three have spanked us in the last few years. Te mountains are not a Mecca for Di- vision 1 recruits. In any given year, how many athletes get that big ride to a Florida or Alabama; maybe one or two. Mt Heritage and Mitchell have been very success- ful in recent years with good old-fashioned, hard-nosed football. Te kind of football North Buncombe used to be known for. I remember playing with a guy that used to get up and farm at 4 am. He would go home after school, put up hay and return for the game that evening. I wish Coach Metts all the success in the world.

Maybe his style of coaching did not gel with our type of athletes. I hope the next coach we get is so hard- nosed he makes Vince Lombardi look like Mr. Rogers. One that will not allow a single player to accept defeat. Winning starts inside.
