Outdoors with Ken Higgins Banquets and wild game dinners
By Ken Higgins Winter is a slower time for many outdoor
sports. A good way to avoid the cold, damp weather is to attend local indoor events. Te Friends of the NRA Banquet will be held
at 6 pm on Friday (Feb. 4) at Te Crowne Plaza with a dinner followed by a live auction and door prizes. Te live auction will feature firearms, out- door art, hunting trips, etc. Tickets are $45 per person. Te money raised from this event goes to sup-
port many local programs such as high-school rifle teams, Boy Scout training, target ranges and law enforcement programs. None of the funds raised at this event are used for political action. Haywood Community College will host a wild
game dinner fundraiser in March at the National Guard Armory. Te Natural Resources Depart- ment students under the leadership of Jenny Carver organize the dinner. Call 828-627-2821 for date and time. Quite a few Leicester residents attend the
school that is just over the mountain. Cost for the dinner is $10 or you can bring a cooked food item and only pay $5 to get in. Tasty wild game
along with fish are in great abundance. Game- calling contests, live auction, silent auction and door prizes provide a lot of fun, and it is all run by students. I had never been to a silent auction until last
year but after someone explained, I jumped right in. A silent auction is where items are displayed on tables and you write down your name and bid amount on a clipboard in front of that item. Anyone walking by can raise your bid by writ- ing down their name with a higher bid. Bidders have to go back and see if anyone has raised their last bid. Tis occurs during the dinner before the main event. Last year was a sellout with over 800 people attending, mostly families. Items donated for the auctions last year were
fly rods, knives, paintings, wood crafts, exercise equipment, tents, leather goods, boots, fishing lures, decoys, turkey calls, turkey vests, knife sharpeners, t-shirts, hip waders, rifles, shotguns, ammunition, fishing trips, fishing vests, women’s purse, camouflage hats, oil change coupons, flashlights, rifle slings, cleaning kits and more. Over 100 door prizes were given out in addi- tion to all of the auction items. Every table had a winner. Tis event is a great place to invite your hunting buddies with their families.
