Local writer’s work appears in essay collection

An essay by Weaverville author

and radio producer Fred Flaxman appears in a new collection called “Tis I Believe: On Love.” Te acclaimed public radio se-

ries “Tis I Believe” announces the publication of its new book that is a collection of 60 essays written about this most funda- mental of human emotions. In brief statements of personal belief, writers of all ages and from all walks of life share deeply personal thoughts on what love means to them. Some explore romantic love or love for family and friends, while others reveal love for pets, or love of nature, places or hu- manity. In reviewing the book, Publishers Weekly says, “Tis an- thology beautifully captures our need, and the sacrifices we make, for love.” Flaxman’s essay is about the love

he shared with a childhood dog. It first appeared in his book “Sixty Slices on Life... On Wry: Te Pri- vate Life of a Public Broadcaster.” Flaxman hosts and produces the acclaimed syndicated radio pro- gram “Compact Discoveries.” Tis is the third book from Tis

I Believe, the international proj- ect that engages people in writing and sharing essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives. Te project’s first collection of essays, “Tis I Believe: Te Per- sonal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women,” was a New York Times bestseller.

write a 500-word statement about that belief and the story behind it. To date, more than 90,000 people from all 50 states and 98 countries have submitted essays to the project. Tese essays, along with some 800 statements from the original Murrow series, are archived and searchable at thisi- believe.org. Tis I Believe essays, as read by

the authors, are broadcast each Friday on Te Bob Edwards Show on Sirius-XM satellite radio, and weekly on Bob Edwards Weekend from Public Radio International.

“Tis I Believe: On Love” is ed-

popular 1950s radio program of the same name hosted by Edward R. Murrow. Revived in 2005 by veteran public radio producer Dan Gediman, the new series illus- trates the continuing power of the simple idea: to encourage people to reflect on the things that mat- ter most in their lives, and then

‘This I Believe’ excerpt Here is an excerpt of an essay by Weaverville’s Fred Flaxman that

appears in the new book “Tis I Believe: On Love.” Flaxman recounts his relationship with his childhood dog.

“When I was eight, I convinced my mother,

who hates animals, to buy me a beagle. We got 50 percent off on Buster because he had stiff hind legs and undescended testicles. It taught my mom to be wary of bargains. “Buster lasted for fourteen years and died

of old age with a little assistance from the veterinarian and the approval of my mother. During his last few, flatulent years, my mother took care of him completely since, by that time, I was away at college. “But for ten years I walked Buster twice

a day--in rain, snow, or shine, like an old-fashioned mailman. I fed him, brushed him, petted him, and took care of him. I also confided in him, and he became my best friend.”
