The NBHS swin team is wrapping up another successful season.

By Matt Tate Endurance, stamina, competi-

tiveness. When you’re short on numbers,

those three attributes can fill in the gaps. Te North Buncombe swim

team has used those in spades this season, sending nearly half of its rather diminutive squad to region- als this year. Te boys’ team, which only has

six swimmers to its credit, has been led by junior Mitch Finney, who will be looking to finish in the top- 12 and qualify for state in the men’s 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle. Finney will also race with cap-

tain Bill Barrett, Andrew Murray and Justin Lance in the 200-yard freestyle event. Barrett and Lance will join Sam Greco and Keith Swigart in the 200-yard medley re- lay as well Te girls’ team will take Laurel

Manion, Amber Williams, Savan- nah Ramsey and Brittany Williams to a 200-yard freestyle relay event. Jennifer Honeycutt and Morgan Brock are alternates. Barrett said the team pulled

through well with only six boys, often competing in multiple events against swimmers who may have just been competing in one event. “It’s a lot of weight on your shoul-

ders,” Lance said. Te girls’ team has a bit more size

with 17 members. Te girls won the Class 3-A portion of the Mountain

Athletic Conference for the second consecutive season, while the boys finished second. “We’re not always the biggest

team,” senior Amber Williams said. “To be able to win the conference for a second year is really good.” Coach Kaley Ballard said in her

five years with the swim team, the BlackHawks have often added ath- letes later in their high school career, some of whom may be swimming competitively for the first time. “We’re having to train and meet that competitive mark all in one

season,” she said. “We’ve been lucky to have a competitive team even though they may have been young and/or inexperienced.” She hopes for the relay teams

to set personal bests this Saturday (Feb. 5) in the regional meet in Huntersville. Seven seniors will depart the

girls’ team after this season, while the boys’ team should retain all six members. Ballard believes a strong crop of

swimmers could join the team next year.
