taker Trantham, age 94, formerly of Fairview, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2011. Mrs. Trantham was born June 9,


1916, in Buncombe County where she had lived all of her life. She was a member of Laurel Pines Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for a number of years. She was a daughter of the late Robert Taylor and Laura Wright Whitaker. In ad- dition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her daugh- ter and siblings, Bernie Whitaker, James Whitaker, Arvin Whitaker, Alvin Whitaker, Claude Whita- ker, Linnie Wright, Robert Whita- ker, Clyde Whitaker, and Elizabeth Cornelius Whitaker Jenkins. Surviving are her son, Joe Tran-


tham and wife Evet of Fairview; sister, Lela Mae Whitaker Tran- tham of Fairview; grandchild, Kathy Jo Redmon; great grand- children, Terry Kyle Wilson, Noah Craig, and Michael Craig; great- great grandchild, Hayden Craig. Mrs. Trantham was proud to


have lived to see and be a part of five generations. Her graveside service was held

Angela Vest Weaverville - Angela “Angie”


Navrkal Vest, 77, died on Jan. 23, 2011, after a three-year struggle with lymphoma. Born on Oct. 4, 1933 and raised in Schuyler, Neb., Angie married her high school sweetheart, Pat. His YMCA career led them to California, Washing- ton State, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Philadelphia. The two retired to Weaverville in 1996. Angie was preceded in death by her mother, Julia Nozicka, her beloved in-laws, Les and Mira Vest, and a cher- ished brother-in-law and nephew. Surviving are her devoted hus-


band of 57 years, Pat Vest; their children, Paul (and Vicki) Vest of Asheville, David (and Claire) Vest of Nashville Tenn., Jennifer (and Tom) Fischer of Downingtown, Pa.; precious grandchildren, Brian (and Jessica) Vest of Charlotte, Kevin Vest of Asheville, Caitlin and Morgan Vest and Rachael Gadd of Nashville, Tenn., and Tommy, Coleman and Adeline Fischer of Downingtown, Pa. Also surviving are Angie’s sisters (and brothers- in-law), Marge Schweizer of San Diego, Ellie (and Denny) Sedlak of Illinois, Joy Navrkal of Arizona, Ju- die (and Darrell) Foust and Betty (and Jerry) Smith of Nebraska; treasured brothers/sisters-in-law from her husband’s family; and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews all over the country. Raising three successful chil-


dren was Angie’s life’s greatest work. She found immeasurable joy in relationships with her nine grandchildren, ranging in age from 26 years to 5 months. Through the years of supporting her husband’s YMCA career, she also bred cock- er spaniel puppies, sold Avon, and worked for the American Insur- ance Institute. She found joy par- ticipating in Episcopal churches in many locales. Her kind heart and “bloom-where-you’re-planted” at- titude allowed Angie to be grafted into many communities and prized by all who were fortunate to know her. Her passing leaves a void in the lives of her family and friends who were like family. Most recently, Angie’s talents


and service to God and others have been appreciated at Grace Episcopal Church, where she led


the Altar Guild and Rummage Sale Committee. She was also active in leadership positions with the Weatherford Chapter of YMCA Retirees, the Heritage Club of the YMCA of WNC, the Weaverville Garden Club; and the Welcoming Committee of Reems Creek Golf Community. In lieu of flowers, please make


donations to the Endowment Fund of The YMCA of WNC (53 Ashel- and Ave, Suite 105, Asheville, NC 28801), the Endowment Fund of Grace Episcopal Church (871 Mer- rimon Ave., Asheville, NC 28804), or a charity of your choosing. A memorial service in celebration of Angie’s life will held at Grace Episcopal Church on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at 2 pm. Following the service, the immediate family will participate in a brief interment ceremony in the Grace Church Urban Garden. Then they can be greeted by guests at a reception in the parish hall.

Briggs, 86, of Leicester, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at his home. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Roy and Ellie Martin Briggs and attended West Buncombe High School. In addition to his parents, he


was preceded in death by his sons, Virgil Ray Briggs and Gay Williams Briggs; and half-sisters, Betty Freeman and Edna Rhine- hart. Clyde is survived by his lov-


ing wife of 55 years, Edna Herron Briggs. They would have been married 56 years on Feb. 4. He is also survived by his daughter, Ellie (Paul) Briggs Brown; half-brother, Jimmy Briggs; grandchildren, Jimmy (Dorothy) Brown, Michael (Misty) Brown, Virgil Briggs and Fred Briggs; and great-grandchil- dren, Tamara, Andrew, Justin and Chanie Brown. A funeral service was held at
