By Robin Wilson Erwin High School students had
a brief evacuation during midterm exams on Tuesday (Jan. 25). Smoke from a motor in one of the heating units was the culprit. Two classrooms on the freshman
hall, the teachers’ lounge and a book storage area had a haze of smoke and odor. West Buncombe Fire depart-
ment responded to the call. “Fourteen hundred students were
evacuated to the gymnasium. Tey did an outstanding job on the evac- uation. Te students and teachers need to be highly commended for being so calm and orderly during the evacuation,” said deputy chief Randy Ratcliff. Te students were allowed back
into the classrooms to finish their exams.
