has been re-examining the possibil- ity that the Sandy Mush community could be in the running as a repository for nuclear waste now that the nation is once again looking for some place to put radioactive material. Residents of Sandy Mush recently
attended a meeting of the Blue Ribbon Panel on America’s Nuclear Future to let their voices be heard that they don’t want a nuclear waste dump in their Western North Carolina community. Te question is what makes Sandy
Mush so attractive for a nuclear waste repository? Mary Olson, the director for the
Nuclear Information and Research Service for the Southeast, thinks she
knows. Olson said that there were a total of 13 sites pointed out as possible sites for a nuclear dump during the Crystalline Granite Repository Pro- gram back in the 1980s, and of those 13, 10 were viable. “I’ve been told, both by people in

Yucca Mountain Repository is in the middle of Nevada, next to a large military range and Area 51. Some believe the multi-billion dollar site will be used by high-level government officials in the event of a national emergency and that's why the Department of Energy is now looking for a new repository site for nuclear waste.
