eighing in at three pounds, the brain is a remarkable organ, comprised of neurons, an intricate mass of minute blood vessels and several other types of cells.
A healthy brain allows us to speak, hear, see, move, remem- ber, feel emotions and make decisions, primarily because of its complicated mix of chemical messengers and receptors and the electrical processes that take place within it. Two of the most well recognized chemical messen-
gers, also known as neurotransmitters, are serotonin and dopamine, and both are of great interest in the pursuit of a healthy brain and slowing down the aging process. Serotonin is a central nervous system neurotransmitter involved in regulating mood, sleep, appetite and sexuality. Dopamine is involved in motivation, reward, addiction, behavioral rein- forcement and coordination of body movement. Minute but powerful, chemical messengers and their receptor sites in the brain are also extremely integral to the success of the internationally recognized substance abuse program at the Hitt Wellness Center. At the center, a propri- etary blend of nutraceuticals are administered that are able to cross the blood brain barrier and aid in the development of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine neurotransmitters. Well ahead of his time with researching amino acids to re-
store neurotransmitter receptor sites, William Hitt, the center’s founder, received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 from CAADE, the California Association of Alcohol and Drug Educa- tors, for the nutraceutical formula he developed. This propri- etary blend of specifically formulated amino acids helps repair areas of the nervous system damaged by addictive substances and restores the brain to its pre-addictive state. The treatment has also been known to improve mental clarity and memory.

At the center, this natural, nutritional therapy for the
brain is referred to as the “addiction prescription,” because it provides the brain with prolonged exposure to optimized nutrients. Bathing brain cells in this manner allows them to repair the damage caused by drugs, alcohol abuse and stress. The five- to 10-day healing process supports the immune system, restores the neurotransmitters, stops cravings and de- toxes the body. Administered intravenously on an out-patient basis, the therapy has been known to help with addictions, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic syndrome. A pioneer in the addiction field, the Hitt Wellness Center began help- ing substance abusers more than 15 years ago. During that time, many scientific studies have been published confirming the brain can in fact grow new neurons via a process known as neurogen- esis. The “addiction prescription” facilitates this process and gives hope to thousands of individuals who are searching for an answer to addiction.
