SPOTLIGHT
standup. I don’t know how I had such a good idea. I get to tell some of my own jokes; I get to wear beautiful dresses all the time, which you know I love. For those nights when I’ve eaten too much then I get to wear comfortable dresses. I get to say what I want to say and I get to hear people laugh every night. It’s a good job. I’m very thankful! Speaking of being thankful. You just finished a film, which says just that, Thanks. Yes, Thanks (which my husband Martin wrote, directed and produced and I
acted in) premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival a couple weeks ago. We have several film festivals we’ll be bringing it to this spring. Wow, I need to know your secret. Not only have you been a Las Vegas headliner for a decade, but also you’ve had such success that you’ve sold more than a million tickets, moved to larger venues “around the world” and had several other projects in between. You know what’s even better? I then get to go home! And especially in Las Vegas
where I get to be a mother to my daughter who is now 8-and-a-half years old. What’s it like raising a daughter in Las Vegas? You know it’s a little bit tricky now that she’s asking about the women pulling their
pants down on the billboard. What’s next for Rita Rudner? We’re looking to make a change and move permanently to our bigger house in Laguna, CA. We have our vacation home there now and we’re building a bigger one for us to call home permanently, which will be nice because already I get many offers to do TV guest shots in Los Angeles. So I’ll be able to finally do those things and be with my daughter. Do you think you’ll relate to The Real Housewives of O.C.? I’ve never watched any of those shows. I know they’re very popular. But something
tells me I don’t have that kind of life. After I hang up with you, I have to go to the bank, to the grocery store, to the
gym...then I’ve got to pick up my daughter from school and take her to tennis lessons. I have a tennis game while she’s doing that. Then I have to get home to make dinner and get to the theater after that. I don’t know what they do, but I’m a working mom. How refreshing, you’ve remained grounded and lead a normal life—whatever that may be. It’s true, I do lead a normal life. I’m like Hannah Montana, only I’m a lot older.
You’ve had a long run in Las Vegas, how great you must feel to know you’re able to see beyond that. It is and I love it here. I love what I do, but I want to do different things. For that I have
Martin, who always has ideas. So we’ll figure it out. I say, “Will you not have an idea for just a minute and let me relax?” Then he gets another idea. I say for every relationship you have to have a Yogi and a Boo-Boo. Yogi says, “Come on, okay, let’s go here and let’s do that!” And the Boo-Boo says, “OK, then let’s do it!” Well I’m the Boo-Boo and he’s the Yogi. I mean two Boo-Boos will never figure out where to go for dinner and two Yogis would do nothing but fight. Yogi and Boo-Boo said it all. I absolutely love that analogy. In my marriage, we were “the heart” and “the head.” Yes, that’s important and very true. You must have that balance. With two hearts,
you’ll be living on the street. With two heads then you’ll never be happy. Well, thank you for bringing laughter and smiles to so many people’s faces throughout the years. It’s been my pleasure and so great talking with you. I hope to see you at my show
when I’m in San Diego. Be sure to tell your readers that I want everyone to wear water- proof mascara because I get a lot of complaints that people’s mascara runs because they’re laughing too hard. Well, I’ll be sure to wear mine and I’ll tell all our gay men to do the same. Exactly, that’s why I’m putting it out there. I don’t want any gay men to be mad at me!
Voted “Best Comedian in Las Vegas” by the Las Vegas Review-Journal for the last eight years and respected as one of the cleanest comics working today, Rita Rudner brings the hilarity she calls her life to the San Diego stage of the historic Balboa Theatre on Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $28 to $50 and can be purchase by visiting
