Landscaping can help prevent fires

Glenn Palmer, a past president of

the Botanical Gardens in Asheville, presented a seminar Oct. 23 at the Weaverville Fire Station about landscaping tips that can protect homes from wildfire dangers, an occurrence that peaks during the late fall, winter and early spring in Western North Carolina. A few of these were to rake up and dispose of plant litter, dead branch-

es and leaves as they build up over the season and to keep vegetation away from power lines, chimneys, roofs and structures. Te Weaverville Tree Board

sponsored the seminar. Further information may be found at ces. ncsu.edu/forestry/pdf/ag/firewise landscaping.pdf.

North Buncombe Hero

Tis week’s Heroes of the Week are all the veterans who have served

this country. Teir selfless service protects this country’s citizens. Some have endured great hardships, separation from family and dras- tically altered lifestyles. Some have experienced the horrors of war. Many have given their lives. All sacrificed something so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today. It would be a stretch to believe that their extraordinary accomplishments are mere coincidence and not due to the discipline, motivational skills, calmness under pressure and other leadership traits that are instilled in every man and woman who has served in the military. Te veterans of this country are Heroes of the Week, every week.
